That is exactly why a growing number of early adopters are experimenting with multi-robot households — pairing different machines to cover each other’s weaknesses. In this guide, we explore whether running more than one robot at home actually makes sense, what it takes to pull it off, and whether you should bother just yet.

Why You Might Want More Than One Robot

Different robots have genuinely different strengths. A robot lawn mower handles the garden. A window-cleaning robot tackles glass. Each device does its one job superbly.

The argument for a multi-robot home, then, is not about redundancy. It is about assembling a team where every member plays to its strengths — much like you would not use a single kitchen knife for every cooking task.

Coordination Challenges

Here is where things get complicated. Running multiple robots in the same physical space introduces problems that a single-robot household simply does not face.

Collision avoidance is the most obvious concern. Two robots rounding the same corner at the same time need to know about each other. A humanoid robot’s charging station typically draws between 200W and 500W. A robot vacuum’s dock draws around 30–60W. If you are running two humanoids and a vacuum, you could be looking at over 1,000W of combined charging load — roughly equivalent to running a kettle and a microwave at the same time, albeit for longer periods.

Circuit capacity matters. Plugging three charging stations into the same ring main is usually fine in a modern UK home, but older properties with dated wiring may struggle. Humanoid plus robot vacuum is the most practical combination today. The humanoid handles tasks that require arms, manipulation, and height — cooking assistance, tidying, carrying items — while the vacuum handles floor cleaning far more efficiently than any humanoid could. There is minimal overlap in their duties and minimal risk of physical conflict since the vacuum operates at ground level.

Humanoid plus robot dog is an interesting pairing for homes with outdoor space. The robot dog can patrol the garden, provide security monitoring, and entertain children, whilst the humanoid focuses on indoor domestic tasks. The two rarely share the same operational space.

Two humanoids of different sizes — say, a full-sized unit for the kitchen and living areas, and a compact model like the Bumi for bedrooms and children’s spaces — is theoretically appealing but currently impractical given the coordination limitations we have described.

Managing via Single App vs Multiple Apps

Today, you will almost certainly be managing each robot through its own dedicated app. Unitree has its app, Roborock has its app, Husqvarna has its app for the lawn mower. Switching between three or four different interfaces to manage your household robots is genuinely tedious.

Platforms like Home Assistant offer a partial solution — you can build a single dashboard that monitors all your robots and triggers basic automations across them. But you still need the individual apps for firmware updates, detailed configuration, and troubleshooting.

We expect this to improve. Several industry bodies are working on interoperability standards, and the Matter smart home protocol may eventually extend to robotic devices. But for now, multiple robots means multiple apps, and there is no getting around that.

Future Outlook

The long-term vision is genuinely exciting. Industry groups are developing inter-robot communication standards that would allow machines from different manufacturers to share spatial data, negotiate task priorities, and avoid each other autonomously. Imagine a household where your robots collaborate like a well-drilled team — the vacuum clears the floor, signals completion, and the humanoid moves in to mop and polish, all without any input from you.

Cloud-based fleet management, already common in warehouse robotics, will likely trickle down to consumer products within the next three to five years. When it does, running a multi-robot home will shift from a technical challenge to a genuine convenience.
